Summary

Giles Tillotson’s Delhi Darshan is a captivating exploration of one of the world’s most enigmatic and historically rich cities. As we embark on this exploration of Delhi, the author skillfully weaves the past and the present, transporting us through the iconic monuments of the city. Through the pages of this book, the author crafts a compelling case for the enduring significance of these structures as witnesses to the intricate and evolving identity of Delhi.

“Old guidebooks speak of the ‘seven cities of Delhi’; but these were all Islamic citadels, built before the coming of the British, and in recent times archaeologists have added more cities to the bottom of the tally just as developers have added many more to its top.” (Tillotson, 2019)

Delhi has been a pivotal center of power for various dynasties, witnessing the rise and fall of numerous ruling powers throughout its layered history. The book is organized into six sections, each dedicated to a distinct phase in Delhi’s history. It commences with the reigns of the Slave Dynasty, followed by Khaljis and Tughlaqs, Sayyids and Lodis, the Mughals, British colonial rule, and the eventual triumph of Independent India. As each historical period unfolds, readers witness the metamorphosis of Delhi’s social and cultural tapestry and the development of new architectural styles.

What distinguishes this book is its depiction of the dynamic interplay between history and contemporary life. It delves beyond mere historical accounts by shedding light on how these ancient landmarks have transformed meaning and function over time. Prominent monuments from the famous India Gate to Purana Qila (Red Fort) have served multifaceted roles, including recreation, reflection, protest, and political propaganda. The author skillfully illustrates that these historical sites are not just static relics of the past but rather living entities intricately linked to the present, adapting to meet the evolving needs and aspirations of its inhabitants.
